The government has suspended Khulna City Corporation Mayor Moniruzzaman Moni after he was named in the chargesheets in two cases over arson and attacks on law enforcers.
The public administration ministry issued the order on Monday.
The ministry’s Deputy Secretary Sharoj Kumar Nath told bdnews24.com that the mayor was suspended in line with the city corporation law after the court accepted the charges.
One of the panel mayors would now be appointed the city’s acting mayor in accordance with the law, he added.
Moni, general secretary of the BNP’s Khulna City unit, was elected mayor in 2013.
Police in June had pressed charges against 56, including Moni, and leaders and activists of the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Khelafat Majlish in the cases.
The government had previously suspended Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Rajshahi Mayor Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul and Gazipur Mayor MA Mannan after they were charged in different criminal cases.
All of them are BNP leaders.
The party has all along alleged that the Awami League-led government was lodging ‘false’ cases against its leaders to remove them from their elected posts.
