An employee of Biman Bangladesh Airlines was held with nearly 3.5 kilograms of gold in Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday night (September 7).
Authority seized 30 gold bars from Aircraft Mechanic Md. Liaqat Ali, an aircraft mechanic of the national flag bearer for 28 years.
Customs Intelligence director general Mainul Khan told banglanews that acting of tip-off, they searched a jet, EK 586, of Emirates Airlines upon arrival at the airport.
“Liaqat got in the plane before us to clean it. During the raid his suspicious behavior made us to quiz him. When he refused we searched him and find three packets of gold bars hidden in his shoes,” he added.
Officials said that each bar weighed nearly 115 grams, in total 3.45 kilograms. Estimated market value of the gold is around Tk 1.75 crore.
“We are asking him about the persons involved. Legal actions would be taken against him,” Mainul Khan added.
